Cat Painting

My name is Marvin Durham, and I live with the owner of this website, Paula Durham. I have recently taken up painting, and feel confident enough in my work to occasionally allow Paula to take pictures of me while I'm working.

You may think cat painting is a new, out of the ordinary art form; however, it has been around for quite some time. I actually got the idea from my good friend Rosie the cat, who introduced me to the art form by showing me the book "Why Cats Paint". Both Rosie and my little brother Cyrus have created some great works, which I hope will be displayed here in the near future. Sadly, we lost Cyrus recently so his body of work is quite limited.

Rosie has not been able to work lately due to issues with her studio. We hope to have those issues solved soon so that she can continue to express herself through her art. With any luck her sister Violet will also join our little circle of artists, however she's quite a bit more shy and likes to work alone, making photographing her work quite difficult. At the moment Violet prefers making her art in more malleable forms, much like the indian sand painters. To her, the act of making art is the focus - she is less concerned about leaving a lasting mark. Currently she is focusing on drawing in the dirt in her backyard. She is quite talented though and we very much hope to convince her to allow an exhibition here.

As you can probably tell, I'm working in the modern style - I am very influenced by Jackson Pollack. I've taken Pollack's drip paintings one step further by splattering paint on the vertical canvas and shaping it with my paws. This style is truly avant garde and should place me squarely in the feline art spotlight. I am also working on some traditional drip art and hope to have something to add here soon.

I hope you enjoy our work, and if you have questions you can ask Paula.

  • This is my first "exhibit-able" work in my opinion. I was inspired by the birds I find in my backyard; one of my favorite things to do is stalk and chase them. I have many quail in my yard, and they do not fly very well. As such, I am able to flit about the yard chasing them; Paula often says that I look as though I'm dancing. I was able to recreate this motion in the studio and am quite happy with the result.

  • This is my brother Cyrus Evinrude's most ambitious work. Like me, he was inspired by the birds in our yard, however in a different way. Cyrus used to sit under the nest in one particular tree and watch the dove above him. He was so intrigued by that dove that he often just sprang up in an effort to snatch her from her perch. He could get himself nearly 3 ft off the ground when he did this! I asked him to replicate this maneuver in the studio and create a painting that would capture this raw energy.

  • This work was inspired by my younger brother Cyrus Evinrude. He recently passed away from an incurable disease, FIP. His passing affected me greatly - he is truly missed by all who knew him. He was a great cat.

I have started working with different mediums; this work is on a white canvas suspended next to the wall.

  • This is another in my series on white canvas. I have been spending quite a bit of time outside lately, enjoying the wonderful winter/spring weather here in Arizona. The flowers are in bloom and the trees are starting to fill out; there is color everywhere. I wanted to transfer the feelings inspired when I'm outdoors to the canvas for others to enjoy.
